COLOR
Color is divided into two uniquely different systems: additive color and subtractive color.
Additive color is an effect of light. The primary colors in additive color are red, green and blue or RGB. The secondary additive colors are cyan, magenta and yellow. There is only one tertiary additive color: white. Subtractive color is created using pigments. The primary colors in subtractive color are red, yellow and blue. The secondary subtractive colors are green, orange and violet. There are six tertiaries that stem from the primaries and secondaries: red-orange, yellow-orange, yellow-green, blue-green, blue-violet and red-violet. Black, white, and gray are colors, but not part of the color wheel. They're called achromatic or neutral colors. |
THE COLOR WHEELThe color wheel is an effective system for organizing and understanding subtractive color.
The two basic opposites in the world of color are warm colors and cool colors. Warm colors center on the color orange and advance in space. Cool colors center on the color blue and tend to recede in space. |

HIERARCHY OF COLORSPrimary colors are the source of all other subtractive colors. They cannot be created by mixing other colors.
Secondary colors are created by mixing 2 primary colors. Tertiary colors are created by mixing an adjacent primary and secondary color. Intermediate colors include the tertiary colors and all other color possibilities lying between adjacent primary and secondary colors. |
